Some bite and alignment problems require more than braces or clear aligners alone. At Roberts & de Marsche, we evaluate how the teeth, jaws, and supporting gums work together before recommending a treatment plan. Depending on your needs, that plan may include jaw surgery, care coordinated with your dentist or periodontist, or specialized orthodontic appliances.
Orthodontics and Jaw Surgery
When the upper and lower jaws do not fit together properly, moving the teeth alone may not fully correct the bite. For patients whose jaws have finished growing, orthognathic surgery may be an option. We coordinate orthodontic treatment with an oral and maxillofacial surgeon to align the teeth and position the jaws, with the goal of improving how the bite functions and creating a more balanced facial appearance.
The American Association of Orthodontists explains how orthodontics and jaw surgery work together. You can also see examples of individualized care in our Complex Treatments Smile Gallery.
Orthodontics When Gum Health Is a Concern
Periodontal disease can damage the bone and tissues that support the teeth, sometimes causing teeth to loosen or shift. Orthodontic treatment may still be possible for some patients after their periodontal health has been evaluated and managed.
In selected cases, carefully planned tooth alignment and a retainer bonded behind the teeth may help stabilize their position. Long-term results also depend on consistent home care, dental cleanings, and any periodontal treatment your dentist or periodontist recommends. We work with your other dental providers to determine whether orthodontic treatment is appropriate and how to protect your oral health throughout care.
Specialized Appliances for Difficult Bites
A severe bite problem does not always require surgery. Depending on the patient’s age, growth, and specific bite, treatment may involve a Herbst appliance, a rapid palatal expander, or temporary anchorage devices (TADs), which provide a fixed point to help move teeth. Elastics, headgear, and other appliances may also be part of the plan. You can learn more about early treatment options on our Braces for Kids page.
Following instructions for removable appliances, keeping appointments, and wearing retainers as directed all play a part in the result. As we often say, “Good patients get good results!”
